Hammering Gods, “Todd Is God!”– Todd Rundgren and Three Dog Nightmare!

$

Look at these Golden Gods! Behold the majesty that was Led Zeppelin – often imitated but never bettered, they were the pinnacle of Rock in the 70′s…
and boy, did they know how to party! I’ve got the ultimate look at that, plus:

If you don’t know the face above, then you are missing out on one of music’s most eclectic and talented performers, and a master in the studio.

Finally, we’ve got your “three dog nightmare!”

Three Dog Nightmare! The Chuck Negron Story by Chuck Negron with Chris Blatchford – published in 2000

Do you recognize any of these songs? “Joy To The World”, “Celebrate”, “An Old Fashioned Love Song” or “Easy To Be Hard?” If so, then you know the group known as “Three Dog Night”. A large group of musicians fronted by 3 lead singers – Cory Wells, Danny Hutton and Chuck Negron.

First, the name. “A label called White Whale Records wanted to sign us immediately but we decided to see who else was interested. We did a showcase at the Troubadour in Los Angeles and a bidding war started. We ended up signing with Dunhill-ABC Records, but we still needed a name,” founding singer Cory Wells says.

The official commentary included in the CD set Celebrate: The Three Dog Night Story, 1965-1975 states that vocalist Danny Hutton’s then-girlfriend June Fairchild suggested the name after reading a magazine article about indigenous Australians, in which it was explained that on cold nights they would customarily sleep in a hole in the ground while embracing a dingo, a native species of wild dog. On colder nights they would sleep with two dogs and if the night was freezing, it was a “three dog night”.

Three Dog Night’s self-titled debut album was released in late 1968 and it became an immediate hit. Between 1968 and 1975, Three Dog Night had 21 Billboard top 40 hits in America, three of which reached Number One – three number 1 hits! Yet, here is what lead singer Chuck Negron remembers:

“I lay there shaking like a Vegematic and sweating through the blankets. I prayed, “Please let me die or give me one minute of peace from this sickness.” Then it happened. I knew then, and I still know now, that God did something for me that I could not do for myself. It was a gift. I was weak, alone, desperate, dying, and afraid. I surrendered. I prayed. He saved me. That’s the only way I can explain what for me was the beginning of a miracle.”

So there you have it – this book delves into the sordid underbelly of fame…when you seemingly have it all and throw it all away. Chuck Negron lays it all out there with a candid, brutal honesty…

Here’s what Amazon says: “Three Dog Nightmare” is a profoundly moral tale, an inspiring story of recovery and resurrection. But without a fall, there can be no resurrection. Few have fallen as hard, or as low. And even though we know the outcome, even though we know that he survived, Chuck Negron’s is a story that seems at times almost too painful to read in its devastatingly sad portrayal of wasted talent, ruined chances, and burned lives.

“I shoved drugs into my system like a little kid eating candy. And in the end, it took away everything: my money, my fame, my wives, my children, and my self-respect. I traded a Mediterranean-style villa in the Hollywood Hills for a corner of an abandoned building where I slept on a filthy mattress I found in a vacant lot.”

That he survived at all is a miracle; that he has his career back on track and a new life devoted to helping other drug abusers is an inspiration. So throw on a little “Eli’s Coming” and read all about it!

TODD IS GOD!

A Wizard, A True Star: Todd Rundgren In The Studio – by Paul Myers and Todd Rundgren – published in 2010.

First, let’s give some credit to his hits: “Hello, It’s Me”, “Can We Still Be Friends”, “I Saw The Light”, “We Gotta Get You A Woman” and the classic tune played now at every sporting event, “Bang On The Drum All Day.”

As a huge Todd Rundgren fan, this look at his career captures the professional life of one of music’s great artists.

Hailed in the early stage of his career as a new pop-wunderkind, supported by the certified gold solo double LP Something/Anything? in 1972, Todd Rundgren’s career has produced a diverse range of recordings as solo artist, and during the seventies and eighties with the band Utopia. He has also been prolific as a producer and engineer on the recorded work of other musicians.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Rundgren engineered and/or produced many notable albums for other acts, including Straight Up by Badfinger, Stage Fright by The Band, We’re an American Band by Grand Funk Railroad, Bat Out of Hell by Meat Loaf, and Skylarking by XTC. In the 1980s and 1990s his interest in video and computers led to Rundgren’s “Time Heals” being the eighth video played on MTV!

So about this book…here is how Amazon describes it: “Throughout his career Rundgren has ping-ponged between the worlds of producer and recording artist with varying degrees of critical and commercial success. After learning his craft as a songwriter and arranger with Nazz Rundgren gained attention by engineering recordings by The Band.

His reputation was cemented by a string of noteworthy productions beginning in 1971 with classic albums for Grand Funk Railroad, including the mega-hit “We’re An American Band”.

Todd also produced the follow-up album “Shinin’ On”, which was released with a 3D album cover!

Todd also produced Hall & Oates – and yes, arguably the least commercial album ever released by the duo. If you go to the “Live From Daryl’s House” podcast, watch Todd’s first appearance on it.

Daryl Hall fairly bristles when hearing that many blamed Todd for the album’s hard edge. The closest thing to a single was “Too Much Too Soon”, but on the podcast they perform a number of great hit songs together…beautiful!

Todd also produced Meat Loaf’s legendary “Bat Out Of Hell” CD – one of the best-selling albums of all time. While this book isn’t really a “tell-all”, Todd is brutally honest about the artists he produced, especially if they didn’t get along…stories about XTC and Cheap Trick, for example, are hilarious.

Todd produced The Patti Smith Group – an album including the classic song “Dancing Barefoot”.

And of course, Todd produced dozens of his own albums, including a sonic masterpiece called of course, “A Wizard A True Star”.

Researched and written with the cooperation of Rundgren himself, “A Wizard A True Star” is a fascinating authoritative account of four decades of making magic in the recording studio.

If you are into music, and how it is created, then this is the book for you. Read it, and also download Todd’s music from iTunes!

Hammer Of The Gods by Stephen Davis – published in 2001

And now, onto the golden Gods of Rock.

They were legends based on myths—myths of fantasy, power, and black magic. The tales of their tours were the most outrageous in the already excess-laden annals of modern music. The era of Led Zeppelin personified sex, drugs, and rock & roll.

Based on interviews with the band’s musicians, friends, employees, and lovers, Hammer of the Gods tells the shocking story of Led Zeppelin’s successes and excesses in the 70s—when Zeppelin reigned as the industry’s biggest act.

This book tears the cover off the band’s legendary exploits in the seventies….eye opening, controversial, and in the spirit of an era of “anything goes” in rock ‘n’ roll!

Exclusive sources. Documents. Interviews. Photos. Revelations about a band—and an industry—at its shameless peak. Read it all, and see why “Hammer of the Gods” is a classic of rock journalism in its own right.

The book is so full of anecdotes I don’t know wehre to begin, but here is one:

After becoming the biggest rock group in the world, Led Zeppelin still had people they were fans of…the stories about meeting Elvis are hilarious, and both Jimmy Page and Robert Planet were HUGE Joni Mitchell fans…so much so that Plant was too shy to actually meet her when given the chance….

Their legendary Manager Peter Grant was a huge Bob Dylan fan, and at a party went up to introduce himself:

“I’m Peter Grant, and I manage Led Zeppelin”. Dylan looked at Grant briefly and deadpanned: “I don’t come to you with my problems, do I?”

This book is a great look at a majestic band…

Then, grab the outstanding 4-DVD look at the group and see them performing – “there’s a lady who’s sure all that glitters is gold, and she’s buying a stairway to heaven.” And don’t even get me started on that “bustle in your hedgerow” – awe-inspiring!

Pink Floyd Fights! Rolling Stones Stories! Pam Des Barres and Groupies, Groupies, Groupies!

Hello, classic rockers and those who wish they were! It’s time to look back at a time when the world was young, music was anarchy, and groupies were everywhere!

Life by Keith Richards and James Fox (Contributor) – published in 2010

Oh, and what a life it was! This is one of the most candid, honest, and entertaining books I have ever read – and there was SO much I didn’t know!

Amazon tabbed it as one of the best books of the month it was released, saying: “It’s hard to imagine a celebrity memoir–or any memoir for that matter–that is as easy to drink in (so to speak) as Keith Richards’s Life. Die-hard Stones fans will love tales of the band’s ascension from the “interval” band at the Marquee to the headliners at Super Bowl XL; guitar gearheads will scramble to sample the one lick that has eluded Richards for 49 years; and historians and romantics alike will swoon over the raspy, rambling, raucous detail of this portrait of the artist.

Yes, some tales are told, but “Life” is refreshingly not gossipy, mean-spirited, or sordid–or at least not more than the truth demands. Richards is as comfortable in his bones as a worn pair of boots, and Life captures the rhythm of his voice so effortlessly that reading his tale is like sharing a pint with an old friend–one who happens to be one of the most iconic guitarists of all time.”

“The world’s greatest rock band” — between 1966 and 1973, it’s hard to argue that they weren’t. Songs poured out of them: “I used to set up the riffs and the titles and the hook, and Mick would fill in. We didn’t think much or analyze….Take it away, Mick. Your job now. I’ve given you the riff, baby.”

Drugs? Necessary. In the South, a black musician laid it out for Keith: “Smoke one of these, take one of these.” Keith would move on beyond grass and Benzedrine to cocaine for the blast and focus, heroin for the two or three day work marathon. Engineers would give their all and fall asleep under the console, to be replaced by others. Keith would soldier on. “For many years,” he says, “I slept, on average, twice a week.”

ENTER THE ICONIC LOGO!

With money and success, though, there’s suddenly time to think — in Keith’s case, about all the things about Mick that drove him nuts. His interest in Society. His egomania. His insecurity. And his promiscuity: “Mick never wanted me to talk to his women. They end up crying on my shoulder because they’ve found out that he has once again philandered. What am I gonna do? The tears that have been on this shoulder from Jerry Hall, from Bianca, from Marianne, Chrissie Shrimpton… They’ve ruined so many shirts of mine. And they ask me what to do! How should I know? I had Jerry Hall come to me one day with this note from some other chick that was written backwards — really good code, Mick! — “I’ll be your mistress forever.” All you had to do was hold it up to a mirror to read it… And I’m in the most unlikely role of counselor, “Uncle Keith.” It’s a side a lot of people don’t connect with me.”

THE TINY TODGER CONTROVERSY!

This story broke big on March 18, 2012 Keith Richards has apologised to bandmate Mick Jagger and admitted some parts of his autobiography Life “really offended” the singer. In the new autobiography, Life, Keith writes: “Marianne Faithfull had no fun with his tiny todger.

“I know he’s got an enormous pair of balls – but it doesn’t quite fill the gap.”

The guitarist described the frontman as “unbearable” and revealed his nicknames for Jagger are “Brenda” and “Your Majesty” in the candid memoir published in 2010.

“He and I have had conversations over the last year of a kind we have not had for an extremely long time and that has been incredibly important to me,” Richards said.

“As far as the book goes, it was my story and it was very raw, as I meant it to be, but I know that some parts of it and some of the publicity really offended Mick and I regret that.”

Referring to a early chance encounter with Jagger when the pair bonded over a love of the blues, Richards said: “What some of our detractors forget is that although we look like old codgers living an ocean apart we are still at bottom the boys on platform three at Dartford Station.”

It ends with Johnny Depp basing his performance as Pirate Jack Sparrow on Richards, and Richards joining him in the 3rd film – as his father! A great great book!

Comfortably Numb: The Inside Story of Pink Floyd by Mark Blake – published in 2008

And then there was Pink Floyd – from the formation of the band, the meltodwn of Syd Barrett – and the raging ego of Roger Waters – this is the book that tells it all!

Mark Blake draws on his own interviews with band members as well as the group’s friends, road crew, musical contemporaries, former housemates, and university colleagues to produce a riveting history of one of the biggest rock bands of all time. We follow Pink Floyd from the early psychedelic nights at UFO, to the stadium-rock and concept-album zenith of the seventies, to the acrimonious schisms of the late ’80s and ’90s.

Along the way there are fascinating new revelations about Syd Barrett’s chaotic life at the time of Piper at the Gates of Dawn, the band’s painstaking and Byzantine recording sessions at Abbey Road, and the fractious negotiations to bring about their fragile, tantalizing reunion in Hyde Park.

DARK SIDE OF THE MOON

One of the most fascinating aspects of this book is how the classic album “Dark Side Of The Moon” was made – using material that had been recorded and set aside, animosity forming within the band due to Roger Waters…and how David Gilmour quietly became the soul of the band.

THE WALL

There are also great stories about how The Wall came about – and how difficult Roger Waters became…all leading to the ultimate disintegration of the group.

THE DIVISION BELL

Pink Floyd would go on to release a number of albums after Waters left, the last being “The Division Bell”. The story of how the band fought over the name, and how Waters launched his own tours, is terrific…in fact, waters is set to perform “The Wall” at Dodger stadium this spring…

Still, you will be hard-pressed to come away from the book with a positive feeling about Waters…instead, you will get a renewed appreciation and respect for David Gilmour…

Meticulous, exacting, and ambitious as any Pink Floyd album, “Comfortably Numb” is the definitive account of this most adventurous—and most English—rock band. You know, the one who flew the pig over the factory for the cover of their album “Animals”…

Still one of the most iconic images in rock!

GROUPIES, GROUPIES, GROUPIES!!!

I’m With The Band by Pamela Des Barres – published in 1988

The stylish, exuberant, and remarkably sweet confession of one of the most famous groupies of the 1960s and 70s is back in print in this new edition that includes an afterword on the author’s last 15 years of adventures.

As soon as she graduated from high school, Pamela Des Barres headed for the Sunset Strip, where she knocked on rock stars’ backstage doors and immersed herself in the drugs, danger, and ecstasy of the freewheeling 1960s. Over the next 10 years she had affairs with Mick Jagger, Jimmy Page, Keith Moon, Waylon Jennings, Chris Hillman, Noel Redding, and Jim Morrison, among others. HERE SHE IS WITH JIMMY PAGE…

She traveled with Led Zeppelin; lived in sin with Don Johnson; turned down a date with Elvis Presley; and was close friends with Robert Plant, Gram Parsons, Ray Davies, and Frank Zappa. As a member of the GTO’s, a girl group masterminded by Frank Zappa, she was in the thick of the most revolutionary renaissance in the history of modern popular music. Warm, witty, and sexy, this kiss-and-tell–all stands out as the perfect chronicle of one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most thrilling eras.

Pamela’s honest, revealing autobiography was an immediate bestseller, and she has released follow up books as well…and critics loved her work:

Cheeseburger Vending Machines! Fries Too! McBaguettes! Jimmy Page! Burger News Galore!

Who’s hungry for some crazy burger news? I know I am!

BEHOLD THE “Mcbaguette!

This Wednesday (April 18), McDonald’s introduces the much anticipated McBaguette for a six-week run at about 1,230 stores in France. They will come in smaller sizes like this:

And bigger sizes like this one:

The burger-on-a-baguette – with Emmental cheese and mustard – is part of the trend to localized European menus that the website Burgerbusiness.com in October 2010 called “burger nationalism.”

The McBaguette is expected to sell for about $5.88 U.S. – at the high end even for Europe’s more-expensive McDonald’s menus.

FRIES TO GO!

Here’s a great idea: french fries sold from a vending machine. This one is from Japan, where they sell just about EVERYTHING in vending machines:

Who knows what they will taste like, but clearly this young woman is impressed:

A CHEESEBURGER VENDING MACHINE!

Now check THIS out! Thanks for the website http://www.kirainet.com/english/ – a geek in japan!

A hamburger restaurant in Tokyo has decided to put a hamburger vending machine at the entrance of the restaurant. You put the coins and you get a hamburger right away. The problem is that there is only one hamburger available at a time, if you want a second hamburger you have to wait until the cook inside the restaurant restocks the machine with another one, or you can go inside the restaurant and order it.

Rocketnews24.com website offers this: a hamburger vending machine at a drive-in eatery in Saitama prefecture in Japan.

The vending machine can be found at “24 Hour Auto Restaurant Tekken Taro”, located in Gyoda city. While this ‘restaurant’ is staffed, all food is offered via one of the many vending machine lined up inside.

This is what they look like right before you eat them…enjoy!

Amsterdam also offers burgers via machine, and I found pictures of places all over Europe…

JIMMY PAGE CHOWS DOWN

I found a search term on my blog that said “Led Zeppelin Eating Cheeseburger” and I thought that was funny, so I tweeted it. Rick Damigella immediately sent me this picture, of Jimmy Page eating a burger…THAT is the power of the internet!

And I followed up with a search for celebrities eating, and found this picture of Jimi Hendrix eating soup, and Katy Perry eating a burger as well – don’t you love the internet?

But of course the ultimate “hamburger eating” shot is this one: President Obama and Vice President Biden – looks good!

Heart! New Kicking & Dreaming Autobiography! Live “Barracuda!” The Greatest Hits!

$

Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart are releasing their autobiography!

Yes, I am a huge Heart fan – partly because they are from my hometown of Seattle, and mostly because they are the greatest sister rock ‘n’ roll act of all time!

Look At The Stats!

Heart have released more than a dozen albums, selling 35 million records worldwide. Now, Ann and Nancy are releasing their story…here is what Amazon has to say:

Kicking & Dreaming!

Two sisters. Two voices. One Heart.

The mystery of “Magic Man.” The wicked riff of “Barracuda.” The sadness and beauty of “Alone.” The raw energy of “Crazy On You.” These songs, and so many more, are part of the fabric of American music.

Heart, fronted by Ann and Nancy Wilson, has given fans everywhere classic, raw, and pure badass rock and roll for more than three decades. As the only sisters in rock who write their own music and play their own instruments, Ann and Nancy have always stood apart—certainly from their male counterparts but also from their female peers.

By refusing to let themselves and their music be defined by their gender, and by never allowing their sexuality to overshadow their talent, the Wilson sisters have made their mark, and in the process paved the way for many of today’s female artists.

In “Kicking and Dreaming”, Ann and Nancy, with the help of critically acclaimed and bestselling music biographer Charles R. Cross, recount a journey that has taken them from a gypsy-like life as the children of a globe-trotting Marine to the frozen back roads of Vancouver, where they got their start as a band, to the pinnacle of success—and sometimes excess.

In these pages, readers will learn the truth about the relationship that inspired “Magic Man” and “Crazy On You,” the turmoil of inter-band romances gone awry, the reality of life on the road as single women and then as mothers of small children, and the thrill of performing and in some cases partying with the likes of the Rolling Stones, Stevie Nicks, Van Halen, Def Leppard, and other rock legends.

Crazy On You!

Here they are performing their first big smash hit on Midnight Special in 1977:

It has not always been an easy path. Ann struggled with and triumphed over a childhood stutter, body image, and alcoholism; Nancy suffered the pain and disappointment of fertility issues and a failed marriage but ultimately found love again and happiness as a mom.

You may not know, but Nancy was married to film maker Cameron Crowe, who directed “Jerry Maguire” and the best movie EVER about music, “Almost Famous.” He also wrote the non-fiction classic “Fast Times At Ridgemont High” after going undercover at a California high school for a year…

Barracuda!

This is the song that made them superstars….as full of pure rock adrenelin as anything Led Zeppelin did, but channeled through the power of two strong woman….this live performance is from the “Ellen” show, when Heart shows up to play the song live after Ellen tries to play the Guitar Hero version…

I ordered the book through Amazon – cannot wait to read their story in their own words…

Mistral Wind Live!

Here is one of my favorite Heart songs: the classic rock anthem “Mistral Wind”, performed by Heart in 2002 in their home town of Seattle – with an energetic guitar by Nancy Wilson, and the best female vocals in rock by Ann:

In addition to the book, Amazon has a great compilation – I own most of their music anyway, but I was drawn to the extensive amount of live and demo material in this….

Strange Euphoria

Here is a writeup on what makes this collection unique:

“Strange Euphoria” is a 3-CD, 1-DVD set that expands across Heart’s entire recorded legacy, including hits, album sides, live performances, demos and rarities. And rounding out the Wilsons’ legacy are solo selections and a pair by the Lovemongers. All together, twenty of the CDs’ fifty-one tracks are previously unreleased, and the DVD serves up a fifty-five minute live performance recorded in 1976 at Washington State University’s television station, KWSU.

The opening instrumental of this vintage performance, as well as a scorching version of “Sing Child Sing,” shows the group’s progressive colors, but as they kick into “Heartless,” it’s clear that Heart was ready to rock. Hard. With the band’s debut album just released, they had the goods, but not yet the fame the album’s hits would bring.

The video’s lighting, camera work and mono sound are good, and the picture (including some primitive special effects) holds up well for something no one probably thought would become historically important.

The CD set begins the Wilsons’ very first single, “Through Eyes and Glass” recorded as Ann Wilson & The Daybreaks in 1968, and released locally on the Topaz label. Key elements of Heart can be heard in the elder Wilson’s voice and flute, though the brooding mood is more connected to 1960s ballrooms than 1970s arenas. Skipping ahead to mid-70s demos, it feels as if the gauze of `60s acid culture has been lifted. Even in this early form, “Magic Man,” crackles with passion in both the rhythm and vocals. There’s a healthy dose of neo-psych in the guitar solo, but the song is undeniably powerful and anthemic.

Though the box set covers songs from all thirteen Heart studio albums, they’re presented in a mix of studio, live and demo versions.

Finally, Heart has a new CD coming out in early October as well, call “Fanatic”..can’t wait to hear it!

I love music, and always interested in the stories about how the music was made – I cannot wait to read this story…and listen to some classic Heart at the same time!

Almost Famous…

Time to look at rock and roll from a very different angle. The role of “music lover” takes many forms, and thanks to a trio of great books, AND a great movie, it’s time to “meet the groupies!”

GROUPIES, GROUPIES, GROUPIES!!!

If you haven’t read this trilogy of books from Pamela Des Barres, you are missing some of the most fascinating, insightful and well-written books about music ever released!

Pamela Des Barres is rock n’ Roll’s most famous groupie – and I’m not saying that, she is! Pamela has written a series of incredible books about life “with the band”, writing about her fascinating life hanging out with rock stars. Let’s take a look!

I’m With The Band by Pamela Des Barres

The stylish, exuberant, and remarkably sweet confession of one of the most famous groupies of the 1960s and 70s is back in print in this new edition that includes an afterword on the author’s last 15 years of adventures.

“Eminently readable, offering all the fun of a trashy read without resorting to sensationalism or mean-spiritedness.” —North Bay Bohemian

Des Barres followed up her bestselling autobiography with a new book, chronicling the life of groupies!

Let’s Spend the Night Together: Backstage Secrets of Rock Muses and Super Groupies

Since rock’s beginnings, there have been groupies. These chosen few women who bed, but not often wed, the musicians of their dreams are almost as much a part of music history as the musicians themselves.

Pamela Des Barres offers an all-access backstage pass to the world of rock stars and the women who love them. Pamela now the spotlight on other women who have found their way into the hearts and bedrooms of some of the world’s greatest musicians. In “Let’s Spend the Night Together”, she tells, in their own words, the stories of these amazing women who went way beyond the one-night stand.

Among the 24 groupies profiled in the book, you will meet:

· Tura Satana, Miss Japan Beautiful, who taught Elvis how to dance and gave him lessons in lovemaking

· Cassandra Peterson, aka Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, who tangled with Tom Jones in Sin City

· Soulful Miss Mercy, who discovered that not only does the rest of the world listen to Al Green while making love–so does Al Green

· Cynthia Plaster Caster, who redefined art and made history when Jimi Hendrix plunged his member into her plaster mold

This is a fascinating look inside rock, no holds barred…and Des Barres followed up this book with another intimate look at her own life:

Take Another Little Piece of My Heart: A Groupie Grows Up

This candid sequel, tracing her life since the 1970s, is another great book – Pamela’s no-holds-barred approach to her life as a celebrity. She candidly discusses a rough dozen years of marriage to singer-actor Michael Des Barres…

Among the other stories revealed: going into labor with their only child at the home of Frank Zappa; spends time with old cohorts Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith and admits she once fell for a woman, comedian Sandra Bernhard.

One note from Amazon: “some readers may skim over the “cosmic” insights, most will sympathize with the plight of her emotionally troubled son and many will welcome the return of this irrepressible, unflaggingly optimistic writer.”

These are honest, fascinating books, and they are terrifically entertaining and well-written…kudos to Des Barres for her honesty!

She currently has a great website – so check it out and relive the free spirit of the early music scene – see what she is up to now, and enjoy the ongoing material she posts on the site – terrific!

And now, onto Penny Lane…

Penny Lane: We are not Groupies. Groupies sleep with rock stars because they want to be near someone famous. We are here because of the music, we inspire the music. We are Band Aids.

Almost Famous Penny Lane

Penny Lane is the “music lover” from Cameron Crowe’s terrific movie about his start as a teenaged music writer, “Almost Famous.”

Here is the “Almost Famous” trailer:

Almost Famous

William Miller is a 15 year old kid, hired by Rolling Stone magazine to tour with, and write about Stillwater, an up and coming rock band.

Almost Famous Stillwater

The film is director Cameron Crowe’s semi-autobiographical account of life as a young Rolling Stone reporter. The actual group that Crowe first toured with was The Allman Brothers Band. (Gregg Allman was the one who distrusted him and kept asking if he was a narc.) Crowe’s real-life near-fatal plane crash happened while traveling with The Who.

Almost Famous Actors

Billy Crudup plays Russell Hammond, who IMDB says is based on Glenn Frey of the Eagles. His relationship with Penny Lane forms the backbone of the film, and Kate Hudson was oscar-nominated for her role….she is terrific, not only in her scenes with the band, but also the friendship that forms with William…

Almost Famous lead characters

Stillwater’s songs were written by Peter Frampton (who also had a small part in the film), Cameron Crowe and his then-wife Nancy Wilson of the rock band Heart, a fact indicated early in the credits although the music acknowledgments credit Russell Hammond and Stillwater as if they were real authors and performers.

Almost Famous Penny Lane groupie

Penny Lane: I always tell the girls, never take it seriously, if ya never take it seriously, ya never get hurt, ya never get hurt, ya always have fun, and if you ever get lonely, just go to the record store and visit your friends.

If you haven’t seen this movie, run out right now and buy the director’s cut on DVD or blu-ray, which is called “untitled”, the original name of the film….

Almost Famous untitled

A brilliant movie that captures rock ‘n’ roll AND the world of groupies in a funny, touching way…

Almost Famous...

Chicago is a beautiful city – and a great food town!

Chicago Illinois skyline

There is no doubt that Chicago loves meat – there are scores of great steakhouses – everything from Gibson’s to Chicago Cut – with a dozen more lining up right next door…but Chicago also loves their burgers, and there is a heated debate on what is Chicago’s best burger joint….

Chicago's best burger Kumas Burger

Behold The Kuma Burger!

The original Kuma’s started in 2005 with its flagship location at the corner of Belmont and Francisco avenues in Chicago’s Avondale neighborhood. Now, they’ve expanded. After three stops at Kuma’s Too, I am ready to say that this offshoot of the legendary Kuma’s in Chicago is making a strong run for Chicago’s best burger! Let’s look at the evidence:

Kuma's Too Chicago burgers

Kuma’s Too!

“Kuma’s Too” opened early in 2013 in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago. The look is very straightforward from the outside – and on a sunny day, they open up the windows and let the sun shine in…

Kumas Too

On my first visit, I sat at the bar – where rules state that anyone eating food gets seating preference over drinkers – who they point out can drink standing up, but you need a seat for one of these burgers….more on the Kuma rules as we go along…

Kuma's Best Burger

I ordered the Kuma Burger my first time in, the first burger on the list and their signature burger – medium rare of course…and here is what I got:

Kumas Burger Chicago Best burger

It’s basically a bacon cheeseburger with a fried egg on top…delicious but straightforward in a way – a great burger, but not worthy of the title of Chicago’s best…it was perfectly cooked and tasted great, but I sensed that I would need to go deeper into the menu to really test the kitchen:

Chicago's Best Burger Kumas Too

That said – look at how beautiful this burger is….still, I needed to come back and try something more “inventive”…and in keeping with the POV of the restaurant, more heavy metal…

The “Led Zeppelin”!

Yes, Kuma’s Too is a big fan of classic hard rock and metal – you will find lots of 80′s metal band posters like this one on the walls…

Kuma's Too metal posters

The “rules” posted by the bar state that they love heavy metal music, so let them decide what to play – they don’t take requests! On my second trip in, I decided to try something a bit more challenging, still sitting at the bar…I needed to order a burger that was clearly influenced by their musical taste:

Kuma's Too Bar

Because I love the band, I tried the “Led Zeppelin”:

Kuma's Led Zeppelin Burger

Behold The Great Zeppelin!

OK, now THIS is a burger! The same 10-oz. beef patty as before, but this time topped with pulled pork! Fried Pickles! Cheese! BACON!

Kuma's Chicago Burgers

It was everything you could want and more: it was beautifully cooked and juicy – to the point it dribbled down my arm – and it had a terrific mix of flavor…as you can see from the picture – this burger came LOADED!

Kuma's Led Zeppelin Burger

Delicious, crunchy french fries come with every burger – but you can substitute for a salad as well…the ONLY substitutions they allow: as the rules state – their job is to make the food, your job is to eat it – so don’t ask to change how they cook it!

Kuma's french fries

This burger came loaded with flavor – and the flavors were distinct: you could taste the grilled hamburger AND the slightly sweet pulled pork…a beautiful blend…

Kuma's best burgers in Chicago

This was a masterpiece – the crunchy fried pickles were great, the thick chewy bacon was smoky – and of course, the smoothness of the pulled pork – a perfect blend of flavors…Kuma’s was rocking now!

Led Zeppelin burger Chicago

Now Comes The Multiple-Choice Test!

I still wanted to try more! Lucky for me, Kareen and her husband Chris were willing to join me and Alex for one last test of Kuma’s…here is the happy trio just before we headed in…

Alex Duda Kareen Gunning Chris Rigby

This time, we sat at a table…after a 45-minute wait outside…which is normal for this place – but they are very friendly and efficient at the door – their popularity just mean they are always packed!

Kuma's Too Chicago

On this last trip I got a chance to really peruse the menu – which is loaded with burger options, plus sandwiches, mac-n-cheese you make yourself form a list of ingredients, and more! They post their menu on their website so you can see all of the great options there…

Kuma's Too Menu

As noted before, the music is played loud and the walls are adorned with heavy metal memorabilia…

Kuma's Too posters

We sat Chris down by the Judas Priest poster and made our choices: for Kareen, it was a
“Black Sabbath” burger! This simple delight had a 10 oz. patty that was seasoned with a blackening spice, plus chili, pepper jack cheese, and fresh red onion!

Black Sabbath Burger

Alex went with: The Absu!

Kuma Too's Absu Burger

“The Absu” is a 10 oz. beef patty smothered in tomatillo salsa, pepperjack cheese, red onion avocado relish, queso fresco, and topped with a trio of breaded deep fried chiles!

Kuma's Absu Burger Chicago

Alex said that the creaminess of the queso fresco was a perfect foil for the fried chiles, giving a hot and smooth taste simultaneously…

Kuma's Absu burger

Every month, Kuma’s has a different “special” burger, and this month it was
THE COUGH!

Kuma Too COUGH burger

“The COUGH” is 10 oz. of beef topped with fried pickles, swiss cheese, roasted pork, cherry pepper relish and slathered with “Dusseldorf” mustard!

Kuma Too Burger!

I had to try this special, especially since the mustard was a unique addition that I wanted to try…

The Cough Burger

I sometimes worry that restaurants overload their burgers with TOO MUCH good stuff, so that it becomes a chore to get through it – and the flavors are no clearly defined…but there was no such problem here!

Kuma Too's COUGH burger Chicago's Best

These flavors worked perfectly with each other – thick, smoky bacon and crisp pickles, plus full-flavored swiss cheese….and the mustard was strong, bold and it gave the burger a unique taste – delicious!

Chicago's Best Burger

There a dozen different burgers you can try, but for Chris, it was nothing but the BIGGEST that Kuma’s Too had to offer!

Kumas Too Burgers Chicago best burgers

As our server came to the table, we all had to stop and take a deep breath – because Chris ordered:

THE SLAYER!

KUMA'S BURGER THE SLAYER

OK, now that you’ve gotten your breath back, behold this massive plate of greatness! “The Slayer” doesn’t even have a bun!

Slayer burger

What you get is a massive plate that begins with a bottom pile of fries – topped with a 10 oz. burger, chili, cherry peppers, andouille, onions, jack cheese, and – as the menu says – ANGER!

Kuma Burger The Slayer

OK, without a doubt this is one of the most unique burger dishes I have ever seen…here is what it looks like when you dig into it – you can now see the burger patty, which was smothered when it arrived at the table:

Kuma's Too Chicago's Best Burger

Needless to say, Chris and Kareen took half of it home for dinner – which isn’t a bad way to end a burger day!

“Kuma’s Too” lived up to everyone’s expectations: we each had a uniquely different experience, and the entire meal was prepared perfect…they really know how to deliver great food – and they are really pushing hard to be “Chicago’s Best Burger”!

We Know Chris Liked It!

kuma burger the slayer

Chris gave it a big thumbs up – even though he couldn’t come close to finishing it! I have to get back there for the mac’n'cheese soon – and to try a few of the other burgers – and maybe have another go at “The Slayer!”

Happy Birthday, Julia Child! The Classic Chef Remixed!

Time to rock out with Julia Child!

First of all, happy birthday Julia! This iconic chef is celebrating a birthday today, and her big smile and great food will certainly always be missed! So let’s sing a song to her – with Led Zeppelin’s help!

Concert Led

OK, I know that “Julia Child / Led Zeppelin” isn’t a match you are used to, and you won’t get it here either…however, you will get a beautifully done ode to Julia and her passion for food:

Julia Child Remixed!

In celebration of her 100th birthday, PBS just posed this: “Julia Child Remixed” by John D. Boswell, aka melodysheep, for PBS Digital Studios. Please support your local PBS station to show your support for this terrific work:

http://www.pbs.org/donate

So Let’s Celebrate Julia Just A Bit More!

Julia wrote a great memoir that details her life in the kitchen, and her time in the bathtub with her husband!

My Life In France – Julia Child and Alex Prud’Homme. Here is her classic book about her life in France, which led to her becoming America’s greatest cooking personality.

Julia Child single-handedly created a new approach to American cuisine with her cookbook “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” and her television show “The French Chef”, but as she reveals in this bestselling memoir, she was not always a master chef. Indeed, when she first arrived in France in 1948 with her husband, Paul, who was to work for the USIS, she spoke no French and knew nothing about the country itself. But even before she could cook, Julia knew how to shock – just look at this Valentine’s Day card she sent out one year!

Her book vividly recounts her culinary education, from taking classes at the Cordon Bleu to her struggles with the head of the Cordon Bleu, rejections from publishers to whom she sent her now-famous cookbook, and a nearly fifty-year long marriage that took them across the globe. She became an icon – so much so that Dan Aykroyd parodied her on Saturday Night Live in the 70′s:

And of course, Meryl Streep portrayed her brilliantly in the movie “Julia & Julia…

I had the chance to actually cook on her stove…thanks to Patricia Wells!

“We’ve Always Had Paris…And Provence” by Patricia and Walter Wells.

Here is the Amazon writeup of Patricia Wells and her memoir:

“Patricia Wells, long recognized as the leading American authority on French food, and her husband, Walter, live the life in France that many of us have often fantasized about. After more than a quarter century, they are as close to being accepted as “French” as any non-natives can be. In this delightful memoir they share in two voices their experiences—the good, the bad, and the funny—offering a charming and evocative account of their beloved home and some of the wonderful people they have met along the way.”

Patricia Wells has published a number of food guides and cookbooks, and they are all terrific. Here is just one of my favorites:

Patricia and Walter own a home in Provence, which they open up several weeks a year for a cooking class – one that Alex and I were able to attend in 2009.

PATRICIA WELLS COOKING CLASS IN HER KITCHEN!

Every day you plan, prepare, cook and consume a terrific series of dishes, made as a team, under Patricia’s expert direction…

Here we are with Patricia, posing in front of the Julia Child’s stove – a gift to Patricia from Julia – this is her provencal stove she cooked on for years:

What is so much fun about the cooking class is that it takes place at their home – which they call Chanteduc – located in the shadow of the french village Vaison la Romaine, near Avignon:

The book is full of stories of the life they have built together in Provence, and when you spend a week cooking with them, you see what a terrifically happy couple they are. Here is Alex getting some instruction from Walter:

After cooking together, you eat the food in a group setting – here we are on the veranda enjoying lunch together – a wonderful way to savor the hard work that went into the meal.

Every day another meal, another adventure – so much fun, and always with the full support and guidance of Patricia:

The twelve of us had the best time cooking with Patricia, as she guided us through an amazing array of dishes, always using the best local ingredients, many from her own garden…

OK, I mugged to the camera while Patricia did most of the work…

ALEX’S EGGPLANT DISH!

Look at how beautiful this dish is, made with eggplants you harvest from Patricia’s garden!

It was one of our favorite vacations ever, and we learned things that influence our cooking to this day. Check out Patricia’s website for a bunch of great stuff, including information on her classes: http://patriciawells.com/ . Here is our view of the town from our room…

We stayed in the small village of Vaison la Romaine, so french and perfect for a cooking adventure…the picture above is the view from our front den window, and this was our view of the town’s old fortress from our back terrace outside our room…

The medieval streets of Vaison la Romaine were so much fun to wander….

As you can tell, we loved it! Even if you can’t cook with Patricia, pick up one of her many cookbooks – and read her memoir with Walter – and live the provencal life!

And click the story below to read all about our cooking adventure with Patricia!

PILE-OF-CASH-MONEY-100-DOLLAR-BILLS

Well, perhaps not, but I do appreciate the interest in the stories: whether they are about food, travel, movies, music, or even stuff like THIS:

Burger King Chinese salad towers

Yes, if you saw my story, you know that Chinese Burger King customers have started to “super size” their meals at the salad bar…and if you’ve ever read a blog post of mine, then I can guarantee you’ve seen one of these:

hamburger recipes

Of course I LOVE burgers – and bacon too! I especially love bacon when someone has done something REALLY WRONG to it – like creating a bacon sandwich with ten pounds of bacon – like this one!

A Bacon Mona Lisa!

And I love when people use bacon for “non-food” things like making a portrait of the Mona Lisa – all out of bacon!

All The Stories Will STILL Be On Johnrieber.com FIRST!

As always, EVERY story is posted on this site first and foremost…but I wanted to also offer a place to go for a “best of” look at some of the topics I’ve posted about A LOT…like the wackiest place in the world: TOKYO!

alex sim wise tokyo cosplay

Because I’ve posted so many food stories, I’ve set up a website that will showcase all of my food posts, like the one that focused on the “bread-cheese-bacon-bread-cheese-bacon-bread” cheeseburger!

OK, this was designed to be, as it is known in TV, as a “deep tease.” You will have to keep reading to find out how I ended up taking this picture of Jenna Jameson and Sylvester Stallone – it’s all part of a birthday celebration of sorts…

Two Years Of Posting!

John Rieber blog

Yes, it’s the two year anniversary of this blog! When my wife Alex suggested I start this blog two years ago today, she thought it would be a fun creative outlet. She had NO idea it could lead to THIS:

bacon cube burger japan

Yes, I used that trust Alex placed in me to share things like this “bacon cube burger”, and some of you have thanked me for it. I have also shared things like THIS:

sgt-peppers-bee gees

If you don’t recognize this image, consider yourself lucky. (Yes, it’s The Bee Gees as Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band!) While this blog has been a fun project for me, it has also turned into much more: it’s been a way to share a wide variety of stories of interest to me, and more importantly, it has been a great way to meet a lot of new people with similar passions…like all of the Todd Rundgren fans I’ve met…

Todd Rundgren greatest hits

521,270 Strong!

I wanted to update everyone on the blog, and of course to thank all of you who take the time to read it. Last year at this time, I had just cracked 104,000 views.

Eagles on stage with eagles logo

In the last year, I saw a huge increase in the average daily traffic to the site – thanks in part to the huge amount of interest in things like the Eagles reunion tour, which you can see above – as well as the large number of people who have been interested in seeing just HOW Marlon Brando remembered his lines on the set of “The Godfather”:

The Godfather exclusive

As you can see, he DIDN’T! Yes, that is Robert Duvall holding cue cards for Brando! That story has been very popular, and if you missed it, here it is:

http://johnrieber.com/2013/03/20/brandos-cue-cards-real-horse-heads-the-godfathers-best-stories/

I also shared Clemenza’s recipe for meatballs – you know, when you need to feed a dozen guys after you “go to the mattresses”:

So, thanks to all of you, I smashed through a half a million views for the blog! I wanted to not only thank everyone for their support, but to share some of the most popular stories – and preview what is still to come!

Cool It, Ringo!

Ringo Starr Raquel Welch

So, what have people responded to most? Well, it’s been everything from crazy stuff like this picture of Ringo and Raquel Welch clowning around on the set of the cult classic “The Magic Christian”…in fact, these guys always do great:

The Beatles Rooftop Performance

The Beatles never cease to interest people, and rightly so – my single most viewed story of last year was this one – looking at the “lost” Beatles documentary, “Let It Be”:

http://johnrieber.com/2013/04/06/let-it-be-the-beatles-lost-documentary-londons-live-beatles-rooftop-concert/

Over 49,000 views for this story so far – as always, The Beatles have spoken…well, at least their fans! And speaking of rabid fans, let’s hear it for “Jerseylicious!”

jerseylicious cast

“Jerseylicious” Forever!

Thanks as well to the terrific cast of “Jerseylicious”, and to the fans who love them…my wife Alex Duda created this show in 2009, and in the five seasons so far I’ve been lucky enough to befriend many of the incredibly talent people followed on the show…

Olivia Blois Sharpe Jerseylicious

Oliva is not only “America’s Sweetheart”, she’ a terrific makeup artist – and a wonderful person as well…Tracy is also great, and yes, she got married in the “still to be seen” season six of the series…

Jerseylcious Tracy DiMarco And Cory Wedding

I’ve had an amazing amount of interest in my behind-the-scenes looks at the show…like when Gigi, Tracy and Olivia visited Steve Harvey:

steve harvey, alex duda and jerseylicious cast

It was a great year for the team – I had more than 11,000 views of the story about the “Jerseylicious” book by Anthony and Olivia – with amazing cast pictures by Karl Giant!

So many fun posts so far, and more “Jerseylicious” to come….you know, THE WEDDING…

In addition to stories about TV and movies, I also love posting stories about music…including stories about the eagles, Paul McCartney, great new female singer/songwriters like Grace Potter, the best and worst Jame Bond themes, and of course:

Todd Rundgren fans

“Todd Is God!”

Todd fans know what that means, and they showed it in a big way this year…I want to thank the Todd Rundgren fans who have really shown support for this blog, including a retweet from Todd himself! Here is that story:

http://musicplatter.com/2013/11/01/laura-nyro-todd-rundgrens-muse-todds-retweet/

The original story was about Todd’s friendship with Laura Nyro, an amazing singer/songwriter…and apparently Todd approved!

Laura+Nyro

I posted this story and got a retweet from Todd’s twitter account – which was really cool – I’ve also been lucky enough to have been acknowledged by Director William Friedkin, Actress Rebel Wilson and the legendary singer/songwriter Paul Williams….among many others who have RT’d my stories and shared them with friends…

What’s With All The Sites?

I’m sorry if I confused some of you with the “topic-specific” sub-sites, but here’s an explanation: When I started blogging, Alex suggested a title that would capture what the site was all about – but as you see, it’s about a lot of different stuff! So I used my name as an easy entry point…

confused-face

Well, maybe not so easy, since my entire life has seen RIEBER spelled “REIBER”…So, to resolve the confusion, here’s how it works…I post virtually every single day on Johnrieber.com. I hope you all sign up to get notifications – so you won’t miss anything like THIS:

The Led Zeppelin legend began in January 1969. From the opening salvo of “Good Times Bad Times” through “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You”, “Communication Breakdown” and “Dazed And Confused”, the album introduced the band’s classic rock sound and left an indelible mark on the music landscape!

Led-Zeppelin-classics

Led Zeppelin’s remastered debut album will include additional companion audio of an unreleased concert from Paris 1969! So the original album will be remastered with alternative versions and a live concert!

Led-Zeppelin-Led-Zeppelin-Super-Deluxe-Edition-CD-Vinyl-Box

Led Zeppelin I will also be released on multiple CD, vinyl, and digital formats as well as a Limited Edition Super Deluxe Box! So many ways to experience the “hammer of the gods!”

Led Zeppelin in Concert

The companion audio for Led Zeppelin I features a previously unreleased performance recorded on October 10, 1969 at the Olympia Theatre in Paris. The nine-song set features seven tracks from the album, including an epic 15-minute version of “Dazed And Confused,” as well as “Heartbreaker” and “Moby Dick,” which would debut on Led Zeppelin II!

Speaking of that:

Led Zeppelin II!

Any Led Zeppelin fan will tell you that this second album blew the doors off rock and roll music forever. The band wrote and recorded nearly all of “Led Zeppelin II” while touring to support the debut album. Incredibly, the album was released just seven months after Led Zeppelin in October 1969.

led_zeppelin_ii_super_deluxe_new

“Led Zeppelin II” features some of the band’s most beloved tracks – such as “Ramble On” and “Heartbreaker” – and of course, one of Zeppelin’s most beloved classics: “Whole Lotta Love”! The album is certified diamond by the RIAA with sales of over 12 million copies.

Here is their 2007 reunion combo of “Heartbreaker / Livin’ Lovin’ Maid”:

Led Zeppelin live

This is, without a doubt, the greatest heavy metal band of all time – listening to these songs again is a revelation – and then, as they were rock Gods, they decided to put a new twist on their music…

remastered album Led Zeppelin 3

Led Zeppelin III

Following the success of their first two albums, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant took to the now famous Bron-Yr-Aur cottage in Wales in 1970 to start the early composition of “Led Zeppelin III”. This album has classic tracks such as “Immigrant Song” and “Since I’ve Been Loving You”… the album soared to the top of charts in October 1970 and has since been certified 6x platinum.

Here is a classic live version of “Immigrant Song:”

Led-Zeppelin-Led-Zeppelin-III-Super-Deluxe-Edition-CD-Vinyl-Box

There are nine tracks on the “Led Zeppelin III” companion material, and it offers a window into the band’s recording process with seven studio outtakes of songs from the album as well as three previously unheard compositions: “Jennings Farm Blues” (an instrumental forerunner of “Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp”), “Bathroom Sound” (an instrumental version of “Out On The Tiles”), and their take on the blues classics “Keys To The Highway/Trouble In Mind.”

Led Zeppelin remastered albums

Yes, there is MORE remastered Led Zeppelin on the way! And, if you were EVER to question their “rock gods” moniker, just watch this:

This live performance of “Stairway To Heaven” is from Zeppelin’s 70’s film “The Song Remains The Same” – and it is widely considered the greatest rock song of all time…

And now, get ready to hear “Stairway” in a newly remastered version that will send you right “to heaven!”

Led Zeppelin Rocks Again!

The music has lived on – and now it is back in remastered special editions! Just announced are ALL NEW remasters of “Led Zeppelin 4″ and “House Of The Holy!”

Here are the details!

led-zep-iv

NEW EDITIONS OF “Led Zeppelin IV” and “Houses Of The Holy” have been announced as the latest additions to the Led Zeppelin remasters series!

Both records have been remastered by Jimmy Page and will each feature a second disc of unreleased tracks!

led-zeppelin-iv-remastered

Unheard versions of every song on “Led Zeppelin IV” will be included on the album’s bonus disc, including alternate mixes of Four Sticks, Misty Mountain Hop, The Battle Of Evermore, Going To California and Stairway To Heaven.

Yes, an alternate mix for “Stairway To Heaven”, although he entire album is brilliant form start to finish!

“House Of The Holy!”

Their followup is almost as strong, and it’s being remastered as well!

Houses of the Holy

“Houses Of The Holy” will feature rough mixes of The Ocean, Dancing Days and No Quarter alongside a piano-less version of The Rain Song and the guitar mix backing track for Over The Hills And Far Away.

As you can see, another GREAT album full of classic Zeppelin!

Houses of the HOly Led Zeppelin remaster

“Led Zeppelin IV” and “Houses Of The Holy” will be available via Atlantic/Swan Song on October 27. They will go nicely with the first three remasters – more on that in a moment!

For the full tracklistings, head over to:

ledzeppelin.com

Led Zeppelin has many signature rock tracks like “Kashmir”, “Whole Lotta Love” and of course, the greatest rock song of all time: “Stairway To Heaven.”

But they also had some of the tightest rock songs ever as well, and sometimes those get lost in the Zeppelin shuffle. For that reason, I wanted to highlight some of Zeppelin’s catchiest – and among their shortest – rock tunes – here are my five favorites!

Led-Zeppelin-remasters-770

#5 – The Song Remains The Same! – from “Houses Of The Holy”

Yes, it was the title of their concert movie, but it was also a killer rock track that will be re-released in a newly remastered version soon…here’s a great live version:

Led Zeppelin Live

Next up is their tightest rock song ever – from their iconic double album “Physical Graffiti”…which may be the greatest double album release of all time!

#4 – Night Flight – from Zeppelin’s double album “Physical Graffiti”:

Behold the punch of “Night Flight!”

Led+Zeppelin greatest hits

The band has always been an FM classic rock staple – with songs that could go upwards of twenty minutes – but this band was also able to write a hit single, and here is another example – Zeppelin’s riff on The Beatles “Lovely Rita!”

#3 – Livin’ Lovin’ Maid – from “Led Zeppelin II”

Led-Zeppelin-classics

Their most popular rock single may be this one, and for good reason – it includes the lyrics that have come to define the band:

#2 – Immigrant Song – from “Led Zeppelin III”

Aside form being one of the most aggressively catchy rock songs of all time, it included the line “hammer of the gods”, which has described the band ever since…and it is an amazing rock song. Here is a great live performance posted on youtube by Rhino Video:

Led-Zeppelin-Jimmy Page

Such a great song! A terrific cover version was done by Trent Reznor for the film “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”…a great version, but the original is impossible to top…

Led Zeppelin in Concert

No matter how much I love all of the above songs, there is not a song written that doesn’t capture the world of rock ‘n’ roll better than this one – and with the remasters version on the way in October, it is time to rock and roll again:

#1 – Rock ‘n’ Roll! – from the album “Led Zeppelin IV”

“Been a long time since I rock and rolled…” The opening words to the great rock single ever written! Led Zeppelin released their fourth album and told the world they were rock gods! “Black Dog”, “Going To California”, “Stairway To Heaven” – it is an album that never stops!

Here is the band performing the song live in 1973:

Hammer Of The Gods!

Just five incredible songs from the greatest rock band of all time! And as I said before, soon you can own it all!

Led-Zeppelin-Led-Zeppelin-Super-Deluxe-Edition-CD-Vinyl-Box

“Stairway to Heaven” indeed!

And now that the fourth and fifth albums are due for re-release in October, we are counting down the days until we get the remastered “Kashmir!”

Cannot wait to “rock and roll!”

Time To Rock Out With Julia Child!

Julia Child

First of all, when August 15th comes around, it means all foodies need to shout:

“Happy Birthday Julia!”

This iconic chef changed the way everyone thought about food, and she broke many barriers as well! Her big smile and love of food will certainly always be missed! So let’s sing a song to her!

Julia Child Remixed!

In celebration of her 100th birthday two years ago, PBS posted this: “Julia Child Remixed” by John D. Boswell, aka melodysheep, for PBS Digital Studios. Please support your local PBS station to show your support for this terrific work:

So Let’s Celebrate Julia Just A Bit More!

Julia wrote a great memoir that details how she grew to love food, her life learning to cook in the kitchen, oh – and her time in the bathtub with her husband as well!

Julia Child

My Life In France – Julia Child and Alex Prud’Homme.

Here is her classic book about her life in France, which led to her becoming America’s greatest cooking personality.

Here is how the book is described on Amazon: Julia Child single-handedly created a new approach to American cuisine with her cookbook “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” and her television show “The French Chef”, but as she reveals in this bestselling memoir, she was not always a master chef.

She became an icon – so much so that Dan Aykroyd parodied her on Saturday Night Live in the 70’s:

And of course, Meryl Streep portrayed her brilliantly in the movie “Julia & Julia…”

Cooking With Julia!

I never had the chance to meet this great personality, and I certainly didn’t get to cook with her – but I got close! t had the chance to actually cook on her stove…thanks to Patricia Wells!

More on cooking with Julia in a moment, but first, here is a look at the terrific memoir from Patricia Wells:

Patricia and Walter own a home in Provence, which they open up several weeks a year for a cooking class – one that Alex and I were able to attend in 2009 and cook with Julia!

PATRICIA WELLS COOKING CLASS IN HER KITCHEN!

We and the best time cooking with Patricia Well and her husband – a group of 12 of us – for five delicious days. Every day you plan, prepare, cook and consume a terrific series of dishes, made as a team, under Patricia’s expert direction…

Here we are with Patricia, posing in front of the Julia Child’s stove – a gift to Patricia from Julia – this is her provencal stove she cooked on for years – so, I did cook with Julia, just many years apart!

What is so much fun about the cooking class is that it takes place at their home – which they call Chanteduc – located in the shadow of the french village Vaison la Romaine, near Avignon:

Their book is full of stories of the life they have built together in Provence, and when you spend a week cooking with them, you see what a terrifically happy couple they are.

Check out Patricia’s website for a bunch of great stuff, including information on her classes:

http://patriciawells.com/

Here is our view of the town from our room…

We stayed in the small village of Vaison la Romaine, so french and perfect for a cooking adventure…the picture above is the view from our front den window, and this was our view of the town’s old fortress from our back terrace outside our room…

The medieval streets of Vaison la Romaine were so much fun to wander….

As you can tell, we loved it! Even if you can’t cook with Patricia, pick up one of her many cookbooks – and read her memoir with Walter – and live the provencal life!

And click the story below to read all about our cooking adventure with Patricia!

Today is the third year anniversary of this blog, and I want to take a moment to thank everyone who visits – and if you don’t want a piece of “bacon cake”, then maybe this will do:

chicken_wing_cupcake

Yes, this is a chicken wing cupcake, and I share this photo for a reason: it was three years ago when I shared the recipe for making them yourself…

http://johnrieber.com/2012/02/03/buffalo-chicken-wing-cupcakes/

Three years of posting stories about food, travel, movie, music, books, concerts, great adventures both personal and professional…and yes, stuff like this:

Doughnut Cheesesteak Burger!

The Majesty Of A Cheesesteak Doughnut Burger!

Yes, I post about burgers a lot. Because many of you seem to enjoy these unique foodstuffs. And yes, there is much more to come. But before we devolve into a discussion of “Cheesesteak Doughnut” burgers, let me thank the person behind this story – and behind this blog.

Cal Pep Cava Alex Duda

Alex Duda gorgeous Cadaques smile

Three years ago, my wife and ongoing inspiration Alex told me to write a blog and have some fun…and that fun included stories about our adventures in Spain, Provence and more, including the Cannes film festival…

Alex duda Cannes

That’s my wife Alex and I along with our good friend Michael Castner in a Cannes hotel stairwell waiting to interview a celebrity. I have shared a number of fun stories from the past, including the story behind this photo of Michael interviewing Arnold Schwarzenegger, while I watch in the orange shirt:

Alex has been amazingly supportive of this blog, letting me share some of our adventures with you – but she couldn’t have imagined it would lead to this:

Tokyo burger tower

The Tokyo Burger Tower!

Little did Alex know that, as I looked for things that interested me enough to write about, I would find a world full of crazy food – from a “Tokyo Burger Tower” you see above to the best burger currently being made in Cambodia!

Some people love these burger posts – so thank you for your feedback – and one, Jeff Greenfield, HATED a food story I posted: showcasing the spaghetti-stuffed hot dog!

Not sure why, but Jeff said this freaked him out a bit…so now I have to keep looking for more wacky food mashups just to keep him on his toes…you know, like the “bacon cheeseburger-stuffed doughnut!”

In the three years I have been posting, these stories have collectively generated almost one million views – it is exciting to see the response to new stories as well as stories posted a year ago or longer – and from the comments I have gotten, it’s nice that a wide range of topics are of interest…from amazing travel memoirs like this:

Yes, you can never go wrong when you’ve got The Beatles helping you out! My “Let It Be” post continues to be the most viewed story of all time on my blog, which I love because this Beatles documentary is probably the greatest “lost” film of all time, and you can read my entire post about it here:

Now, onto a “different” kind of movie…

42nd street

Three years ago, I discovered that certain stories got a lot of interest, like films from the “grindhouse” era of New York’s 42nd street: it was almost three years ago when I actually warned people which movies NOT to show at a family holiday gathering!

the sinful dwarf

Which, I will reiterate, is NOT a film to be shared with relatives…although “The Sinful Dwarf” is a classic example of “euro-sleaze”, a rough type of 70’s film…classic cult cinema that lives on thanks to DVD and on demand services – and I do have a fondness for wacky exploitation movies, like this:

mantis-in-lace

Grindhouse Cinema Lives!

Yes, it’s an acquired taste, but I have met a ton of passionate exploitation fans who enjoy stories about his unique time in movie history…and look, not only did I share the plot of “Mantis In Lace”, but I found this picture as well!

Jeff Rieber London

My son Jeff went with me on a work trip to London, and got to work with the crew for a few days as well…which led to what we call his “London grind” adventure – a hilarious night out with some very drunken British business people, highlighted here:

Knebworth House

Welcome To Knebworth House!

This is Knebworth House, a classic British country estate located about 25 miles outside of London. It’s been the home of the Lytton family since 1490! Knebworth House was originally a red-brick Late Gothic manor house, built round a central court which served as an open square. Talk about British manors!

Oh, and they love to put on concerts here too! The Knebworth music festival is celebrating its 40 year anniversary in 2014.

Freddy Bannister founded the Knebworth Festival in 1974 – headlined by The Allman Brothers the first year, Pink Floyd in 1975, The Rolling Stones and Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1976, and Led Zeppelin in 1979!

Bannister published his memoir in 2003, and the book comes inside an amazing Knebworth box set as well…even better, his daughter contacted me to find out how I wanted the book inscribed!

Yes, Marilyn Monroe enjoyed a burger, and why not? In her day, photographers hovered for any chance to photograph the star, even if it was while she was dining…

Raquel Welch was a 70’s sex symbol, and it appears that she also always had a burger – and a photographer – at the ready…

RAQUEL WELCH AND CHEESEBURGER

And don’t forget “The King”…

Elvis And A Cheeseburger!

Elvis enjoyed a good burger as well, and as usual, there was a photographer nearby to capture the moment…just like the time that Led Zeppelin Guitarist Jimmy Page enjoyed his hamburger…

It seems that everyone has been photographed while eating – but I need someone to please tell me why Robert Plant has an ice cream cone AND a devilish look on his face!

Time To Investigate: Celebrities Eating Food Online!

It’s a scary thing to look up on the internet – if you enter search words celebrities and food – SO much stuff shows up, including compilations like this:

celebrities eating food

So George Clooney, Arnold Schwarzenegger and the rest like to eat too – and someone took the time to create this tapestry celebrating it! It’s almost disturbing in a way – so many pics of celebrities eating – even funny stuff like this:

President Obama fast food

Yes, President Obama likes a good burger and fries like the rest of us. In fact, there is a Tumblr blog that has a ton of these pics – it’s called, of course:

“Pictures Of Celebrities Eating Food!”

It’s hilarious, check it out here:

http://picturesofcelebritieseatingfood.tumblr.com

The site has a picture of another President, President Kennedy, eating what they suggest is a hot dog at a ball game:

Today’s Hot Dog Eater!

And if you want a more current “celebrity” eating a hot dog, well this blog has that for you as well, courtesy of a very mod Lady Gaga:

Oh, Gaga like sandwiches too:

“Hey Miley! What’s For Lunch?”

If you have always wanted to ask Miley Cyrus that question, now the internet will answer it for you:

Miley Cyrus candid photo

The correct answer is: she is having a salad in her bathrobe. As I said, there are tons of pics – and many funny websites – that highlight celebrities eating…and of course, there are tons of Kim Kardashian dining photos to gawk at – like these for starters:

Kim Kardashian

candid Kim Kardashian

kim_kardashian_eating

You get the idea – there are literally a thousand more just like it – sometimes I can’t tell if the pictures are trying to show that celebrities are just like us, or is there something more…

Robert Plant Ice Cream

Stop! I mean, what was on Robert Plant’s mind? Anyway, I find this “food trend” humorous and worth pondering as well…and there is a trend toward hot dog consumption as well.

Taylor Swift hot dog

I will leave it at that.

And finally, I have been guilty of adding to this trend. I always say a big “thank you” to Sara Underwood for agreeing to “wear” her food – yes, she dressed up in a bacon bikini for a G4 shoot!

Welcome To Chicago!

Lollapalooza has taken up permanent home in Chicago’s Grant Park, which is a perfect location for a music festival: plenty of room for multiple stages, great food and drink, and of course, for more than 100,000 fans a day. Oh, Did I say food?

Graham Elliott Lobster Corn Dog

Cue The Lobster Corn Dog!

Yes, there were a number of great food options: everything from ribs to pulled pork sandwiches, pizza, and of course, Graham Elliott’s Lobster Corn Dog!

It was delicious. although Alex didn’t need quite so much of the creamy mayo – but you got a good Lobster flavor – and in case you just needed the basic, we also tried a bratwurst from the terrific restaurant Publican!

Nestled up against the Chicago skyline, Lollapalooza has become a well-organized event with stages spaced out well, so you can enjoy a wide variety of music throughout the day, with our handy schedule as a guide:

Time To “Shut Up And Dance!”

We settled in and started to listen to music, beginning with the upbeat rock/pop of “Walk The Moon”, who got the crowd worked up with their hit “Shut Up And Dance”:

Lollapalooza Walk The Moon performance

Walk The Moon played an hour set of upbeat catchy music, and the crowd was fully into the performance – well, except maybe for this Led Zeppelin fan:

The vibe of this year’s event was upbeat and fun – and crowded! Still, with so much room, you could always finds a place to get away from the masses….

There was a wide variety of music, from Walk The Moon to Tame Impala, who performed on the main stage as the warm up to Metallica:

We missed Kid Cudi, who was performing at the same time at the other end of the park, but we did well with Walk The Moon and Tame Impala, and then we hung out for a bit – the best way to avoid a crowd was to avoid the crowd!

Time For Metallica!

Then, it was time for the headliners to take the stage! Here is the first 4 minutes of Metallica from Lollapalooza 2015, including their extended introduction, courtesy of a clip from the classic western “The Good, The Bad & The Ugly:”

The band was tight, and as energetic as the crowd…we listened to them for about a half hour before heading up to the north end of the park for the other headliner, who hit the stage just as it got dark:

Time For Sam Smith!

A more laid-back crowd greeted Sam Smith when he hit the stage at the other end of Lollapalooza – but they were no less enthusiastic for Smith’s soulful singing:

Sam Smith’s Voice Makes The Crowd “Crazy”!

Smith’s voice was perfect on “He’ll Never Love You Like I Can” – an the singer was talkative, funny and upbeat – which lead into a flawless rendition of his hit song “I’m Not The Only One”:

Sam Smith’s voice was beautiful – and all of the bands we saw were polished, professional and genuinely excited to be part of Lollapalooza 2015!

“Eve Babitz is a little like Madame de Sevigne, that inveterate letter-writer of Louis XIV’s time, transposed to the Chateau Marmont in the late 20th-Century–lunching, chatting, dressing, loving and crying in Hollywood, that latter-day Versailles.” –Mollie Gregory, L.A. Times

This is an incredible review for an iconic book about Hollywood that is being re-released – the incredible life story of Eve Babitz!

eves_hollywood memoir

Here is how New York Magazine describes her:

“Bubbly, Busty And Brainy!”

Derek Taylor, the Beatles’ L.A.-based press agent, introduced Eve Babitz to the Fab Four as “the best girl in America.”

the beatles girls

In the swinging 60’s and 70’s of Hollywood’s music scene, Eve Babitz was described as “bubbly, busty, and brainy!” She was the child of bohemian parents, and was raised on high culture and schooled on rock and roll!

eves-hollywood-eve-babitz

She called the Troubadour club and the Chateau Marmot on LA’s infamous Sunset Strip her home, and she was intimately involved with Jim Morrison – plus, she was a great artist, creating album covers for rock bands, like this one for Buffalo Springfield.

“Eve’s Hollywood!”

Eve’s memoir is a fascinating look at Hollywood in the 70’s…here is one of her beautifully written lines from the book:

“But when I hear that liar’s chocolate voice I am, each time, thrown into a confusion of the night he came in alone from the stars.”

As Amazon describes it, Eve’s memoir is “an album of vivid snapshots of Southern California’s haute bohemians, of outrageously beautiful high-school ingenues and enviably tattooed Chicanas, of rock stars sleeping it off at the Chateau Marmont.”

Eve’s candid memoir is a tale of sex and excess on Sunset Strip, at the height of the era of free love and rock ‘n’ roll…

Celebrating “Woodstock”! 3 Days Of Pop Culture Magic! The Music! The Nudity! The Brown Acid!

woodstock 1969

“Three Days Of Peace And Music” That Changed Pop Culture Forever!

It is the world’s most iconic music festival of all time: Woodstock – the 1969 concert that changed pop culture – and music – forever…

This is one of the most amazing lineups of musical Artists ever to perform at one event, and you can re-live it forever!

Woodstock music

Here’s a trailer for the newly remastered documentary film…

Woodstock crowds 1969

From the moment that hundreds of thousands of music fans clogged the roads leading to the site….to the music that was immortalized forever – like Jimi Hendrix performing the “Star-Spangled Banner”…

jimi-hendrix-at-woodstock-69

And It Didn’t Take Place At Woodstock!

That’s right! Here’s a fascinating fact: The festival organizers wanted to hold the event in the village of Woodstock in upstate New York, but they couldn’t find a location! Luckily, after losing their permits a month before the show was to happen, dairy farmer Max Yasgur agreed to allow them to have their festival on his property in the Town of Bethel, New York!

CSNY Woodstock lyrics

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young immortalized Yasgur’s Farm with their song about the event, “Woodstock.”

“Well, I came upon a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, tell where are you going?
This he told me
Said, I’m going down to Yasgur’s Farm
Gonna join in a rock and roll band
Got to get back to the land and set my soul free”

Woodstock acid sales

And of course, one of the most memorable moments in the documentary is when it is announced from the stage that “the brown acid is bad”…you can hear it here:

Woodstock festvial 1969

The documentary is an amazing time capsule, a time of “free love”, where there were no inhibitions, and no reported acts of violence at the festival…

The four-hour film “Woodstock” won the Best Documentary Oscar in 1970. The film was directed by Michael Wadleigh, with a very young Martin Scorsese an an assistant director.

Finally, there is this iconic photo, which was used on the cover of the three-LP set that was released after the event:

It’s hard to imagine how peaceful this massive music festival was, considering what happened on the streets of Chicago just a year before:

chicago riot police

The riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention were over America’s role in Vietnam, and there is a movie that captured some of that real violence – because they filmed in the midst of it!

Hungry?

2015 best burgers

Thanks to Antonio Ruiz and several others for sending me this picture…they naturally assumed it was EXACTLY the kind of burger I would like – and you know what? It IS!

And so is this!

Taylors Refresher 2015 burger of the year

Time For A Cheeseburger!

As we near the end of 2015, I got to thinking about something I love: burgers! And when I think about them – well, I think about this:

Kumas Burger

People share all sorts of wild burgers with me, and I eat some of them as well – as you are about to see!

I have chosen some of of my favorite burgers to share with you today – to honor those restaurants who have made 2015 a towering burger success!

Kuma Too Burger!

One of Chicago’s best burgers was recently called America’s too – I will introduce you to this burger of beauty, as well as some of America’s other best burgers as well.

First however, I would like to honor myself with a burger I created many years ago…

French Fry Burger

Behold The French Fry Burger!

My favorite burger of all time – I created it in high school, when I worked at Herfy’s drive-in in Seattle. It combines all the things I love: it’s a cheeseburger burger topped with fries, then melted cheddar cheese and a dollop of tartar sauce!

When it comes to burgers, all taste combination bets are off!

And Elvis agrees!

Elvis eating a cheeseburger

So does Jimmy Page!

Elvis wasn’t the only superstar who liked to bite into a big burger…

vending machines

Well, the Led Zeppelin Guitarist seems a bit “cautious” when it comes to his burgers, but with this kind of musical muscle behind it, the cheeseburger is the clearly the “food of the gods”!

supersized cheeseburgers

five-napkins-burger1

And That Means Dick’s!

Growing up in Seattle, THIS was my favorite taste sensation:

Dick's Deluxe burger

Dicks Sign

Talk about all-american burgers! The GREAT Seattle burger stand known as Dick’s Drive-In serves up a burger that is simple – and delicious!

Dicks Cheeseburger

Dick’s Drive-In is fast, friendly, and a great Seattle institution – so the next time you are in the Emerald City, this is the place for you!

And if you need a BIGGER BURGER, but still want to honor Dick’s Drive-In, then try this!

Lunchbox Laboratory

Welcome To The Lunchbox Laboratory!

Seattle’s terrific burger bar “The Lunchbox Laboratory” serves up a “super-sized” homage to Dick’s “Deluxe” burger…

Read all about the Lab AND Dick’s by clicking here:

I go to Dick’s every single time I go to Seattle…and when I’m in Chicago, I head to a place with their own unique homage:

Big Mac burger

The “Big Mack Daddy”!

Big ‘n’ Little’s serves up a huge homage to the Big Mac, and as you can see, they tower over the original! This relaxed eatery was featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives”, and they are always packed with fans of stuff like their deep-fried cheeseburger:

big & little's deep fried cheeseburger

Big ‘n’ Little’s also makes an homage to the “Big Mac” that puts McDonald’s to shame – it’s a giant burger that packs a ton of flavor – fresh ingredients, secret sauce and delicious double patties:

Big Mac burger

They also offer great tacos, shrimp and chips, and so much more! Read more about it here:

http://johnrieber.com/2014/10/22/big-n-littles-rocks-the-big-mack-daddy-chicagos-best-burger-bite-on/

And finally, time to get your “Slayer” on at Kuma’s!

kuma burger the slayer

My friend Chris is staring into the face of “The Slayer”, a monstrous plate of burger madness…Kuma’s in Chicago serves it up!

KUMA'S BURGER THE SLAYER

Kuma’s was just voted one of America’s best burgers! They all have a heavy metal theme, which is why I love them so much – because that attitude infuses everything at the restaurant!

Kuma's Chicago Burgers

Their burgers have aggressive, loud flavors and signs warn you NOT to ask for a change in music – it’s their choice!

As I said, a new national poll placed Kuma’s near the top of America’s best burgers…

Led Zeppelin “Stairway To Heaven” Lawsuit Goes To Trial! Homage Or Theft?

Led Zeppelin remastered

“While it is true that a descending chromatic four-chord progression is a common convention that abounds in the music industry, the similarities here transcend this core structure”

With those words, a Judge is taking Led Zeppelin to court! That’s right, rock’s most famous song, “Stairway To Heaven”, has a date in a courtroom due to a long-standing lawsuit over charges that the band stole the song!

As the Judge states above, there are enough similarities in the two songs to send this case to a jury!

led-zeppelin-spirit-stairway-heaven-lawsuit

Lawyers for Led Zeppelin tried to throw the case out, but the Judge ruled otherwise. Here’s how it all began:

“Stairway To Heave” sounds a lot like the song “Taurus” — by a band called Spirit who – allegedly performed it while touring with a young Led Zeppelin in the late 1960s.

As the Judge noted:

“For example, the descending bass line in both Taurus and Stairway to Heaven appears at the beginning of both songs, arguably the most recognizable and important segments. … Additionally, the descending bass line is played at the same pitch, repeated twice, and separated by a short bridge in both songs.”

Listen for yourself here:

Led Zeppelin Spirit Lawsuit

As The Washington Post reports:

“Michael Skidmore v. Led Zeppelin et al. was brought by Michael Skidmore, a trustee for Randy Wolfe of Spirit, who died in 1997. Wolfe, a.k.a. Randy California, wrote “Taurus” in 1967, the suit said; the two sides can’t agree on whether Page and Plant, before they wrote “Stairway,” heard Spirit play “Taurus” while playing at music festivals in the late 1960s.”

It is, without a doubt, one of the greatest songs in rock history….

Led Zeppelin live

Led Zeppelin is considered the great hard rock band of all time, and the album that “Stairway To Heaven” is on, “IV” ( Or “Zoso”, you call!) is widely considered a masterpiece…

Led Zeppelin Zoso

So the case will go to trial, with the potential that Robert Plant and Jimmy Page may be found guilty of plagiarizing the song…

Here is a compilation posted on YouTube of several instances when a Led Zeppelin song has had noticeable similarities to other, earlier songs…

You can read the entire story about the lawsuit, with more details here – thanks to the Washington Post:
